There
are many
nature trails and walks in Cyprus, with much to see from
scenery, archaeology, to just enjoying the unspoilt villages.
The Akamas peninsular is approx 40 mins from Mandria, close to
Polis and Latchi. This are of unspoilt beauty is as close as you
can get to a National nature reserve in Cyprus. The beaches close
by play host to loggerhead sea turtles who use the beach to lay their
eggs.
The Aphrodite Trail
Length 7.5km, time three hours
This starts at the Baths of Aphrodite, up towards Pyrgos tis Rigainas
hill (the castle of Regina), known as Moutti tis Sotiras. This hill can
be quite tiring (370m) especially in the summer. The Baths of Aphrodite
are said to be where the goddess used to bathe and the ruins of the
castle of Regina are said to be of a medieval monastery. Along the trail
there are great views of Polis and the Paphos Forest.
The Adonis Trail
Length 7.5km, time three hours
This trail again starts at the Baths of Aphrodite and goes on to Pyrgos
tis Rigainas and Kefalovrisia. There are lovely views on the western
part across the beaches of Akamas such as Lara, Tzioni and Karavopetres.
The Smigies Trail
Length short route 2.5km, time one hour
Length long route 5km, time two hours
This trail starts at Smigies (near Neo Chorio) picnic site and continues
to Neo Chorio about 2.5km away. The route takes in views east of Polis
Chrysochous Bay, Latchi, Pachyammos and Paphos Forest as well as the
beaches of the Akamas to the west.
Pissouromouttis Trail
Length 3km, time one and a half hours
The trail, which starts again at Smigies picnic site takes in the view of
Polis Bay and the beaches of the Akamas.
Kathikas Trail
Length 2km, time one hour
This route starts 1km from Kathikas towards Pegeia (Peyia), near the
Kyparissos restaurant. The route passes by a stone-built fountain and
the chapel at Agia Marina.
Starting at Pedoulas Village, high in the Troodos Mountains. you take a
circular walk from Pedoulas via Moutoulas and its 13th century church,
enjoying wonderful scenery and some spectacular views. You continue from
Pedoulas through the delightful Platy Valley to the village of Milikouri.
Starting at the Monastery of Kykko and on through dense natural forests
in Cedar Valley to Stavros tis Psokas. This entire area is the habitat
of Moufflon, a horned sheep unique to Cyprus. You descend from the
Troodos through the beautiful, narrow valley of Stavros, and the small,
traditional villages of Simou and Miliou to the pretty little village of
Kato Akourdaleia. The walk now continues through a gentler landscape of
vinyards and citrus groves passing the tiny, but lovely Byzantine
church of Ayia Paraskevi, and on to the pleasant village of Drouseia.
From Drouseia you descend to the west coast on the way to the small
fishing harbour of Agios Georgios tis Pegeias, visiting the dramatic
Avagas gorge on the way.
There are many other walks in the Troodos mountains.
